Central Michigan Cuts Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Last Updated on May 27, 2020
Central Michigan becomes the latest MAC school to announce the elimination of a sport, joining Akron and Bowling Green. The men’s track and field program at Central Michigan will be discontinued, effective immediately.
“We did not make this decision lightly, but we are facing a new financial reality due to enrollment challenges and now COVID-19,” Athletics Director Michael Alford said.
“Hundreds of students have participated in this longstanding, successful program at Central Michigan, and we know this will impact them — and supporters of this program — greatly.”
The decision impacts 36 student athletes, which includes some competing in cross country, and two full-time assistant positions. Central Michigan will now have the NCAA minimum number of 16 programs, as required for those competing at the FBS level in football.
Central Michigan will honor scholarships for current men’s track and field student athletes for the duration of their academic careers, including scholarships for incoming signees. The men’s cross country program will continue as a non-scholarship sport once all signed aid agreements are fulfilled.
“My heart goes out to these student-athletes; I know this is incredibly difficult for them,” Alford said. “We hope they continue their academic journeys at Central Michigan, but also wish them the best if they’re able to continue athletic pursuits elsewhere.”
Central Michigan estimates long-term savings of $628,798 with the move.
