FedEx Pledges $25 Million Over Next Five Years to University of Memphis NIL

FedEx has entered the realm of name, image, and likeness in a big way. The shipping company recently pledged $5 million per year for the next five years to University of Memphis college athletes through NIL. Tigers athletes will participate in FedEx-sponsored initiatives, including social media programs, in-person events, and FedEx Cares initiatives. FedEx’s NIL program will initially focus on football, men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s sports.

FedEx’s expansion into NIL adds an exciting dimension to its sponsorship portfolio with Memphis Athletics, reinforcing its established relationship. FedEx partnered with Altius Partners to launch this NIL initiative as part of its sponsorship portfolio, which includes the Grizzlies’ FedEx Forum, the FedEx St. Jude Championships, the Southern Heritage Classic, and the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. Headquartered in Memphis, FedEx and its sponsorship entities further reinforce their commitment to sports.

“We evaluated the evolving NIL landscape, exploring how we can best deliver positive impact to student athletes and connect them to meaningful opportunities for both themselves and the community and made the decision to reallocate marketing funds to an NIL platform,” said Brian Philips, EVP & CMO at FedEx. “This gives us an opportunity to invest in bright, young athletes in our great hometown of Memphis, strengthening our connection to the next generation of leaders.”

The first activation opportunity for FedEx’s NIL program occurred at the Tigers’ spring football game. Memphis fans participated in a tailgate-like experience to raise awareness of the program. FedEx NIL-sponsored campaigns will continue throughout the year. Furthermore, we can expect other prominent companies with established university partnerships to expand their NIL presence strategically.

“We are truly appreciative of the vision and support of FedEx’s leadership in this area,” said Laird Veatch, University of Memphis Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “NIL opportunities have become a crucial facet of the student athlete dynamic, and we believe major corporate support of NIL will need to be a key part of the future landscape of college athletics. We are confident this groundbreaking commitment by one of the world’s most well-known and successful companies will inspire others in Tiger Nation to realize the power of investing in student athletes and join the mission with further support.”
