Eight-Figure NIL Deal Helps Flip Top QB Recruit Bryce Underwood to Michigan

Six days after announcing his intent to stick with LSU in a since-deleted Instagram post, Bryce Underwood, the nation’s top-ranked quarterback recruit for the Class of 2025, flipped his commitment to the University of Michigan for an eight-figure NIL deal.

Underwood wasted no time, working with Michigan’s NIL collective Champions Circle and Valiant Management, releasing autographed trading cards for $1,900 and $50 jersey T-shirts available for preorder.

Underwood’s flip not only redefined Michigan’s 2025 recruiting class but gave the Wolverines a much-needed boost of hope after a tough season under first-year head coach Sherrone Moore. Despite Saturday’s victory over Ohio State, the Wolverines have struggled on the field this season. However, Underwood’s decision has shifted the narrative, giving fans optimism and excitement for the future.

The NIL Power Shift

Underwood’s commitment was solidified as Michigan pushed the boundaries of its NIL strategy, offering what inside sources describe as a multi-year deal ranging from $10 million to $12 million, making it one of the most lucrative agreements in college football recruiting history. Champions Circle was critical, backed by billionaire Larry Ellison and other prominent donors who helped the Wolverines secure their hometown hero.

This shift toward embracing and utilizing NIL redirects from the prior approach of former head coach Jim Harbaugh. Known for his team-building expertise, Harbaugh’s fear that NIL would disrupt team chemistry made him less willing to dive headfirst into the NIL bidding wars.

The Wolverines have experienced some backlash for lagging in NIL aggressiveness. Yet concerns over an ongoing NCAA investigation kept Michigan cautious, struggling to engage with big-money donors. Moore, however, has demonstrated a willingness to adapt, balancing Michigan’s cultural values with the realities of modern recruiting.

Simply put, the old narrative has changed dramatically. Ellison, a software and media tycoon, had a key role in the flip, contributing to the eight-figure deal that kept Bryce at home.

“We are very excited to keep Bryce home in Michigan as he continues to build his legacy,” said Nate Forbes, chairman of Michigan’s collective Champions Circle. “I want to personally thank Larry and his wife Jolin, who were instrumental in making this happen by providing Champions Circle with invaluable guidance and financial resources.”

In comparison, LSU’s offer was valued at around $1.5 million annually and would have made Underwood the highest-paid player on the team. Michigan blew LSU’s offer out of the water, providing Underwood the opportunity to earn life-changing money by flipping his commitment to the Wolverines.

“It’s part of football now, right? NIL is part of recruiting,” Moore said earlier this week. “We’re just continuing to strive to get the best players that fit us and the best players we can, and we’re getting the support we need to do that.”

Future Expectations From the Wolverines

Underwood’s flip to Michigan is more than just a recruiting win. His arrival also comes with immense expectations. A hometown hero from Belleville, Michigan, the 6-foot-4, 214-pound quarterback brings stellar accolades, including a 50-4 high school record, two state championships, and career state records for passing yards and touchdowns.

However, his arrival will be met with significant pressure. Fans and donors alike will expect Underwood to deliver and produce results quickly, especially given the weighty financial investment tied to his NIL deal.

The challenges extend to head coach Moore as well. With expectations of Michigan’s future resting on Underwood’s shoulders, Moore’s ability to develop his young quarterback will be under intense scrutiny. After a disappointing 2024 season, turning things around will be critical. Although the pressure to meet such high expectations will be immense, Underwood’s skillset suggests he’s capable of making an early impact.
