High-End NIL Game: Exploring Luxury Brand Partnerships in College Athletics

Last Updated on November 17, 2024

In the era of name, image, and likeness, collegiate athletes are gaining access to high-end partnerships typically reserved for professional athletes and celebrities. From deals with Lamborghinis and Corvettes to Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren, luxury brands are recognizing the unique marketing power college athletes hold. The result is a dynamic relationship that elevates the athlete’s image while introducing these brands to a younger, highly engaged audience.

These deals benefit both the athlete and the brand, as partnering with athletes boosts the brand’s visibility and aligns it with youth culture while allowing college athletes to reshape brand partnerships beyond traditional sports marketing to include luxury products.

Two factors contribute to this trend: social influence and status appeal. Many college athletes, particularly in high-profile sports like football, basketball, baseball, and gymnastics, amass large social media followings, rivaling some professional athletes. Brands are leveraging this reach to appeal to younger, brand-conscious consumers. Luxury brands provide athletes with coveted goods that enhance their image and, in turn, amplify the brand’s association. Today, we see NIL deals blurring the lines between sports figures and style icons, appealing to brands focused on lifestyle and luxury marketing.

Notable Luxury NIL Deals Since 2021

Lamborghini and University of Texas athletes: Longhorn athletes Isaiah Bond and Michael Taaffe were selected as brand partners with the Lamborghini Austin Promotional Partner Program due to their academic achievements, community leadership, and success on the field.

“This program rewards student-athletes for success in the classroom, contributions to their community and performance in sports,” said Bruce Knox, managing partner of Lamborghini Austin. “Our committee selected two outstanding student-athletes who took a unique path on their University of Texas Journey, who achieved success in the classroom as well as on the field, and who will join forces to lead the Longhorns in their first year of competition in the SEC.”

Corvette and Kansas State football QB Avery Johnson: Johnson has a longstanding partnership with the Kansas-based car dealership Long McArthur Luxury and sports a one-of-a-kind lavender Corvette. Johnson has an On3 NIL Valuation of over $256,000 and is quickly building a strong social media presence with over 87,000 followers.

“When one of our athlete partners requested a custom, one-of-a-kind lavender Corvette, we made it happen,” the dealership shared on social media.

Mercedes and former Ohio State football QB C.J. Stroud: In 2022, Stroud inked an NIL deal with Sarchione Auto Gallery. He originally selected a $150,000 Bentley Bentayga but then “changed his mind” and opted for a $200k Mercedes G Wagon. This sponsorship deal allows him to swap out vehicles every 45-60 days.

“When you have the best-of-the-best promoting your brand, it only does good things,” said Ryan Burton, GM of the Sarchione Auto Gallery.

Giorgio Armani and Miami football QB Cam Ward: Fashion brands are also embracing NIL partnerships. Giorgio Armani teamed up with Ward, merging athleticism with high fashion and redefining college athletes as style icons. The Miami quarterback headlines his new mantra, “Look good, play good. Smell good, play good,” when using the luxury perfume Acqua Di Gio.

Coach and former LSU basketball star Angel Reese and Oregon football WR Evan Stewart: In 2023, after Stewart prompted Coach multiple times on his Instagram, he became an official partner of the luxury brand. Reese also agreed to a deal with Coach back in August 2023 and gifted her entire team Coach bags ahead of the 2023 Women’s NCAA Tournament.

Ralph Lauren and Texas Track star Sam Hurley: Hurley has one of the highest NIL valuations among men’s college track athletes, with a combined following of more than 4 million followers on Instagram and TikTok. Hurley also reportedly makes a near seven-figure income off of NIL endorsements. As a Ralph Lauren partner, Hurley promotes the fashion brand’s logo and the high-end cologne fragrance Polo Blue Parfum. Hurley attended the 2022 US Open as a Ralph Lauren partner, where tennis legend Serena Williams played her last-ever professional match.
