Shane Gillis Hints About Assisting Notre Dame Football in NIL Efforts

Last Updated on January 28, 2025

Comedian and die-hard Notre Dame superfan Shane Gillis could be spearheading a new chapter in name, image, and likeness for the Fighting Irish. Ohio State was victorious in the College Football Playoff National Game earlier this month. Shortly after, on an episode of Nate and Shane’s Secret Podcast, Gillis shared, “I was looking at the confetti, watching Ohio State and just sitting there, I called my agent immediately, was like ‘Let’s book a show and give all the money to Notre Dame.'” The sound bite from his podcast is buzzing and even managed to get on the radar of Notre Dame superfan Jon Bon Jovi via Instagram. Whether Gillis follows through or not, his comments highlight the growing influence of superfans within the NIL landscape.

Superfans Are Putting Their Money Where Their Mouth Is

Even though no contributions have been made official, this would not be the first time college football die-hards went viral for the sake of wanting to raise NIL funds. Dave Portnoy, founder and owner of Barstool Sports, said he would pledge $3 million in NIL contributions to his alma mater, the University of Michigan, to land a top quarterback. Michigan ultimately landed quarterback Bryce Underwood, the top-ranked quarterback in the Class of 2025. Underwood flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan. As NIL continues to evolve, high-profile fans and alumni could have a more significant role in shaping the future of college football.

Gillis’ Growing Influence on College Football

Gillis left us some hilarious moments during the past season of college football. Some of his highlights include making a joke about Alabama football coach Nick Saban and his Indiana Jones-like top hat, starring in a playful Under Armour commercial before the National Championship Game where he is delivering a lighthearted prayer devotional in hopes for the Fighting Irish to win a national championship and participating in a college football-inspired Bud Light commercial advertising Bud Light college football team-inspired cans. As we advance, we can expect more involvement from Gillis in college football, as he has solidified himself as the most popular Notre Dame superfan. With his comedic takes, viral moments, and growing NIL influence, Gillis is proving that college football’s most prominent personalities are on the field and in the stands. As NIL continues to reshape college football, passionate superfans like Shane Gillis and Dave Portnoy are proving their influence can help shape the identity of their favorite teams. Do not be surprised if your favorite entertainers are not chomping at the bit to help bolster their favorite teams’ NIL pursuits.
