Four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP Stephen Curry is heading back to school. Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, Curry will be the assistant general manager of basketball for his alma mater, Davidson College. Curry is the first active professional athlete in a major American sport to take on a collegiate administration role.
“The Davidson experience is top notch,” Curry said in a statement released by the school. “My journey from when I got to Davidson in 2006 to now demonstrated that I had the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level, got a great education, an amazing network through the Davidson alumni and continue to wave the Davidson flag. I want very talented, high character student athletes to have that same experience.”
Curry will work closely with Davidson’s current general manager, Austin Buntz, who, before his current position as GM, was a member of Under Armour’s global marketing team. Curry’s relationship with Under Armour has been longstanding, so much so that he etched a lifetime deal with them in 2020. He originally signed with the apparel brand back in 2013 and additionally earned the opportunity to create Curry Brand as his standalone brand. Curry Brand has been active in the name, image, and likeness space, signing University of South Carolina guard MiLaysia Fulwiley.
Per the report, Curry, alongside his wife Ayesha, Davidson soccer alum Matt Berman, and his father and sister will contribute to an eight-figure fund to support Davidson’s basketball programs.
Curry left Wildcat fans with some of the best memories from March Madness, including leading them to an Elite Eight appearance in 2008. The following year, he ended the season as the NCAA’s scoring leader and would go on to be the No. 7 pick for the Golden State Warriors. In 2022, his No. 30 jersey was retired by the program and he was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame.
