UConn, Iowa Headline 2024 Women’s Champions Classic

Horizon Sports & Experiences and FOX Sports have announced a partnership to launch the Women’s Champions Classic, scheduled to debut in the 2024-25 season.

FOX will broadcast the primetime doubleheader featuring the women’s college basketball teams from UConn, Tennessee, Iowa, and Louisville. The inaugural event will be held at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Dec. 7.

“The Women’s Champions Classic is the next step in FOX Sports’ longstanding commitment to elevating women’s athletics, and we are eager to showcase these student-athletes at the highest level – in primetime on the FOX broadcast network,” said Jordan Bazant, Executive Vice President, FOX Sports. “Alongside our partners at HS&E, the exceptional participating schools and their conferences, we could not be more excited to bring the Women’s Champions Classic to college hoops fans around the nation.”

The four teams selected to participate in the Champions Classic are among the most prominent in women’s college basketball. Together, they boast an impressive 19 NCAA Division I National Championships and have accumulated 46 appearances in NCAA Final Fours. Additionally, they have collectively earned over 120 conference titles.

The announcement of the Champions Classic is also well-timed, reflecting the significant uptick in viewership for women’s college basketball, thanks in part to superstars such as UConn’s Paige Bueckers and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark. This season, FOX has broadcasted numerous women’s college basketball games, achieving its highest-ever viewership for women’s hoops on Super Bowl Sunday, with close to 1.8 million tuning in to watch Nebraska’s victory over Clark’s Hawkeyes.

“Interest in women’s sports continues to experience exponential growth and basketball is leading the way with viewership and attendance records continually being set,” said David Levy, co-CEO of HS&E. “This moment feels like the right time to launch the Women’s Champions Classic, set in the mecca of basketball, and we are proud to have these four storied programs participate in our inaugural event.”

According to the release, the initial plans for the annual event will include UConn, along with a rotating selection of the most “storied” programs in women’s college basketball.

Tickets to the 2024 Women’s Champions Classic will become available for purchase starting in March.
